What to Get At Mad. Sq. Eats, Now Open in Flatiron

“Many market favorites have returned for 2016, including Roberta’sMacaron ParlourRed Hook Lobster PoundMayhem and StoutMeltKraftCannibalHong Kong Street Cart, and Melt. Among the notable newcomers to this season’s Mad. Sq. Eats are Beatrice Burger, a spinoff of the super-sceney Beatrice Inn and led by Chef Angie Mar. There are three varieties on the menu here, the best of which (called “Animal”) features a beautiful dry-aged short-rib patty, creamy cambozola cheese, and a nice smokey sauce. Also new and also good are the Poke Nachos at Gotham Poke, the chicken sandwich at Asia Dog’s Hawaiian-inspired Ono Hut, and the deep-fried, bacon-wrapped avocado “fritters” at Masa.” – Scott Lynch for Gothmists

Vendor Spotlight: Takumi Taco and Gotham Poke

When Derek Kaye and Marc Spitzer first introduced Takumi Taco at Smorgasburg in 2012, it was a natural extension of creativity for both – weaving the best of Japanese and Mexican edibles together with the charm and convenience of mobile dining. Since then, Takumi Taco has grown into a cherished favorite at Urbanspace markets and beyond, consistently delivering inspired cuisine at the meeting point between two rich and unique food cultures. The team behind Takumi Taco recently launched Gotham Poke, a new concept focused on ultra-fresh fish bowls, at this spring’s Mad. Sq. Eats – proving once again that these are taste-makers to watch.

Takumi Taco currently operates three year-round locations in New York City, and can be found at many of the city’s best seasonal pop-up markets including Mad. Sq. Eats and Broadway Bites. Now in Midtown, with the opening of Urbanspace VanderbiltTakumi Taco offers a fresh and engaging menu of tacos, burritos, rice bowls, and salads that can be customized for any taste. “I was looking to start a concept that really brought together multiple types of cuisine,” says Derek Kaye, whose menu playfully does just that. For a taste of one of his favorites, check out the Spicy Tuna – a glorious medley of sashimi-grade big eye tuna in spicy mayo, balanced with cucumber, radish and jicama in a delightfully crispy gyoza shell.

This spring, adventurous eaters can also get a taste of the team’s new concept, Gotham Poke, popping up now at Mad. Sq. Eats and joining the Broadway Bites lineup this June. “I have always loved Poke and wanted to bring it to NYC,” says Kaye. But what exactly is Poke, and why should we be so excited it’s here? Poke, the story goes, began with Hawaiian fisherman seasoning the cut-offs of their catch for a snack. Seasonings for these raw fish salads were inspired by Japanese and other Asian cuisines, utilizing soy sauce, green onion, sesame oil and other traditional flavors to highlight the fresh flavors of the just-caught fish. To bring these authentic flavors to NYC, Gotham Poke offers 7 signature poke mixes that can be combined with a variety of bases, from fresh seaweed salad to classic white rice, to create the perfect meal. It’s light, fresh, and healthy – it’s Hawaii, in the heart of the city.

It’s a great time of year to check out the spring pop-up markets, try the fresh new flavors of Gotham Poke, and get your fix of all your favorites at Takumi Taco. With so much going on, you might be wondering what’s next for Derek and team. “Urbanspace is an entrepreneurs dream,” says Kaye. “It provides a place for people to give a new concept a shot, test the market and serve as an incubator for small businesses.” So you can be sure that whatever new deliciousness these folks introduce next, you’ll be sure to find it here at Urbanspace.

According to top chefs, Hard Times Sundaes has one of the best burgers in NYC! You’re invited to check out the full list from some of our favorite chefs on Bloomberg, and stop by Urbanspace Vanderbilt to try one for yourself!

“I’ve always had a passion for the old-school American burger,” says Will Horowitz, the chef behind Harry & Ida’s. Andrew Zurica’s truck and its exquisite burgers used to be something of a secret, parked in Mill Basin, Brooklyn. Now, you can find them in UrbanSpace’s midtown food hall, Vanderbilt Market. Horowitz goes for the double cheeseburger, calling it “an unsung hero in a tragic world of overstuffed and overpriced burgers.” ($9.50)
